For those of you who saw the June issue of Practical Boat Owner, you would have seen their feature which tested 8 winches from the marine industries top brands, including the Barton G23 winch! Alongside the Barton winch were winches from other brands including Holt Nautos, Holmatro, Andersen, Harken Radial, Antal and Lewmar.

The testing was split into two parts to really put the winches through their paces. The first was a low load test, aimed at testing how resistant the winches were to riding turns, a problem many boat owners repeatedly curse at!  The test included a jig set up on a standard workbench with masses changed between 50kg and 15kg, changes in length of line and line entry angles altered, which ultimately simulated riding turns. Approximate measure of slip was noted along with how many turns it took to fill the drum. The second, high load test took place at Lewmar’s test facility in Havant. Weights were set up to cause the load on the line to increase as it was hauled in, with the testers seeing at what point the winch would slip.

The Barton G23 and rubber wincher were put on test with extremely positive results, the Barton gear fairing well in the low load testing and reaching over 200kg of weight with no slippage in the heavy load testing. This was particularly impressive when comparing the G23 and wincher to the other brands on test as some did not perform as well as the Barton winch even though they were sometimes over double the price! The tests final verdict chose the Barton G23 & wincher as its pro choice quoting some of its reasons being that it was ‘spectacular value for money’ and ‘incredibly easy to maintain’, giving it the edge on more expensive brands. A fantastic result! Click here to see the whole of PBO’s ‘Pro Verdict’.

The Barton G23 winch on test
Many of you may have seen the June issue of Practical Boat Owner, which put 8 winches on test from the best brands available on today’s market, including the Barton G23 winch!

The testing was split into two parts, the first a low load test which consisted of a jig set up on a standard workbench using a 50kg mass, the aim being to see how resistant the winches were to riding turns. Lewmar’s test facility in Havant was the venue for the second test which was purely a high load test to see at what point the winch would slip. Along with Barton, other brands of winches on test included Holt Nautos, Holmatro, Andersen, Harken, Antal and Lewmar.
